With conference last weekend I had plenty of time to sit and get some more done. As you can see by all the marker lines, I have been having a hard time getting the lettering correct. I was so focused on the spacing I even spelled things, thangs. Good thing it was not hooked that way.<br />
<br />
This is the largest rug I have hooked so far, but I am using #8 strips (1/2 in) so it's going pretty quickly considering how what little time I have spent on it.<br />

Sitting in church I sketched out four rugs with my favorite sayings and scriptures. This was everyones favorite.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/TBT8s3dyW4I/AAAAAAAAF1w/Li5JDfIgMWo/s1600/IMG_5764.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/TBT8s3dyW4I/AAAAAAAAF1w/Li5JDfIgMWo/s400/IMG_5764.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I am tracing the design onto linen but I don't think I will start hooking until the camp. Monka Jones is going to be the teacher and helping us with color planning so I want to see what she has to say. Monika is a wide hooker (#10 and bigger strips) so this will be a big change from the #6 strips I have been hooking with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It was a bench that belonged to my Grandma Larson so I figured it should have something that reminded me of her. <div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SooTHG4HVXI/AAAAAAAAE-A/KpxXwTRNwo8/s1600-h/IMG_3261.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SooTHG4HVXI/AAAAAAAAE-A/KpxXwTRNwo8/s400/IMG_3261.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371126518418724210" /></a><br /></div><div>Three things came to mind right away, chocolate chip cookies, geraniums and lady bugs. A stool that you sit on did not seem like the best place to hook large brown circles with black spots (cookies). I drew a blank about a design with a geranium so I knew it had to be lady bugs. This rug below is one of my all time favorite hooked rugs made by one of the women in my California Chapter- I LOVE IT! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SooO7iSkEgI/AAAAAAAAE9o/HlaqAvJbMJQ/s1600-h/IMG_2405.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SooO7iSkEgI/AAAAAAAAE9o/HlaqAvJbMJQ/s400/IMG_2405.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371121921572475394" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SodIm6hBgvI/AAAAAAAAE9I/9dOwj4NDOYw/s1600-h/IMG_4204.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SodIm6hBgvI/AAAAAAAAE9I/9dOwj4NDOYw/s400/IMG_4204.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370340914042602226" /></a>I wanted to use this idea but taylor it to a stool. I had never met her before but had found her through a rug hooking online forum. Within 2 minutes I felt like I had known Mara Lou forever. </div><div><br /></div><div>Yesterday she called and invited me to go Monika Jones's house to see her rugs and wool. I was so excited I couldn't wait. After hearing Mara Lou say so many wonderful things about Monika and looking at her web site <a href="http://www.folkartlanding.com/">here</a>... I couldn't wait to go. </div><div><br /></div><div>So today we drove about 45 min out to Monika's home.... deep breath.... she had the most beautiful rugs all over her floors! Please forgive me for not taking photos, I was too busy absorbing every second. I learned SOO much in 2 hours. Here are a few of the big ah ha moments for me:</div><div><br /></div><div>She hooks with a 10 cut and it looks amazing! I never dreamed of going over a 8!</div><div><br /></div><div>She makes HUGE rugs. I had not even considered making a rug that large, but in a 10 cut (I have been using a 6) it seems less threatening. </div><div><br /></div><div>She and Mara Lou both use linen backings exclusively and swear by them. I have only used monks cloth, but bought some linen from Monika today. They may have converted me. </div><div><br /></div><div>She hangs her rugs on the wall with those wood carpet strips. - brilliant! I used like 7 nails to hang my rug. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>She uses her rugs on the floor! Kitchen, bathroom... they were everywhere and looked great. I know this sounds ridiculous to even mention, but most rugs I have seen hooked are not used on the floor. When you consider the time and money it takes to make one, I had to put it on the wall... but my next one (after the stool) is going on the floor!</div><div><br /></div><div>I came home from her house so inspired and ready to hook, it was seriously just what I needed. </div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-43331583975017004912009-07-19T07:28:00.001-07:002009-07-19T07:31:52.404-07:00Somebody loves me<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SmMts5nGjvI/AAAAAAAAE2A/ir9KP7el7gA/s1600-h/IMG_3218.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SmMts5nGjvI/AAAAAAAAE2A/ir9KP7el7gA/s400/IMG_3218.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5360178230903344882" /></a>Hawley and John (My Mother and Father in law) not only helped us move up to Oregon, but they went out of their way while up in Washington to go the the Pendelton outlet for me.<div><br /></div><div>Check out this stash of beautiful wool they mailed to me... true love.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you again Hawley & John!!!</div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-35835936141570506562009-07-07T06:22:00.000-07:002009-07-08T12:15:25.005-07:00We have arrived (at least thats what the GPS told me)<div>It has been a long crazy move, but we are finally in Oregon and mostly unpacked. FYI-My huge hooking bag with our frames and current projects came in the car with me.</div><div><br /></div><div>The movers that helped us unload the truck were giving me a hard time at the number of boxes marked "craft room". I am so excited about the craft room, Eric put shelves in for me and it is going to be the perfect place for my creative therapy... as soon as I get it all unpacked.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SlTuhv3mWiI/AAAAAAAAEzA/jj_LvJ2Vc8o/s1600-h/IMG_3091.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SlTuhv3mWiI/AAAAAAAAEzA/jj_LvJ2Vc8o/s400/IMG_3091.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356168120403122722" /></a><br /></div><div>This house is perfect for a hooker. Our computer is in a hallway (again) so to have more room we are going to use my Grandma's stool for the chair. The padding is shot and it needs to be recovered... so of course I need to hook something cool for the seat right away. Any suggestions?</div><div><br /></div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-47207293027935763942009-06-14T17:31:00.000-07:002009-06-14T17:49:50.483-07:00Gene's house blessing<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SjWXkNDqVNI/AAAAAAAAEwQ/kGd49L2NN8o/s1600-h/IMG_2872.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SjWXkNDqVNI/AAAAAAAAEwQ/kGd49L2NN8o/s400/IMG_2872.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347346780808434898" /></a>Isn't this the greatest door mat!!! I just didn't like how it looked...<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUAuhxPbI/AAAAAAAAEq8/a0LSJytY3OE/s1600-h/IMG_2407.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUAuhxPbI/AAAAAAAAEq8/a0LSJytY3OE/s400/IMG_2407.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342205954457943474" /></a>So after a lot of unpicking and rehooking I still don't like how it looks, so I am going to take a break from this and try to finish packing (28 days until we move). Hopefully after not looking at this for a while I will be able to see what needs to be changed, or I may decide to scrap it and start over with more natural colors.<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUA5_ZbyI/AAAAAAAAErE/yH1UwsBkcFU/s1600-h/IMG_2568.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUA5_ZbyI/AAAAAAAAErE/yH1UwsBkcFU/s400/IMG_2568.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342205957535002402" /></a>One of the ladies in our chapter hooked a hedgehog. Haley told her that she has always wanted to have a real hedgehog. The lady gave her a copy of her hedgehog pattern and said "If you can't have a real one you can at least hook one". Haley was really excited about this pattern, but she currently has 3 unfinished hooking projects. So after I found out that Hedgehogs are legal in Oregon, I told her if she hooks this hog and completes it, I will buy her a real hedgehog. She was so excited and asked me to cut the wool and get everything ready for her. I did, including outlining the face and body to make it easier for her. Look how much she has hooked. I am curious to see if she gets this done...</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUZrYnu3I/AAAAAAAAErM/-w81LMfq-vs/s1600-h/IMG_2595.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SiNUZrYnu3I/AAAAAAAAErM/-w81LMfq-vs/s400/IMG_2595.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342206383110994802" /></a></div></div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-9440712133367278672009-05-16T22:39:00.000-07:002009-05-17T21:12:16.728-07:00Hooking in the park<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sg-ky4WEllI/AAAAAAAAEps/WLLSFuKyMW4/s1600-h/IMG_2385.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336665277482702418" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sg-ky4WEllI/AAAAAAAAEps/WLLSFuKyMW4/s400/IMG_2385.jpg" border="0" /></a>Exactly a year ago I learned about traditional rug hooking from women demonstrating it at the park. As I started opening them up I remembered Eric's Mom giving me these. They were her Mother Norma's hand drawn quilting patterns. I thought they were cool when she gave them to me (like 4 years ago), but this time when I opened them it was like finding a treasure. Some of the patterns screamed out to me that they wanted to be hooked and I agreed. <div> <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCU7-RU9I/AAAAAAAAEmc/jLgDgQNkkWQ/s1600-h/IMG_2345.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCU7-RU9I/AAAAAAAAEmc/jLgDgQNkkWQ/s400/IMG_2345.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332757098735424466" /></a>Her drawings are really light so it's hard to see, but this is the perfect design for the runner that I have been planning in my head.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCUjsBIoI/AAAAAAAAEmU/inA04RzrpcA/s1600-h/IMG_2342.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCUjsBIoI/AAAAAAAAEmU/inA04RzrpcA/s400/IMG_2342.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332757092216414850" /></a>Of course I have my priorities in order so I stopped packing and immediately started tracing the design onto red dot so I can transfer the pattern to my rug backing. </div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCUBB65jI/AAAAAAAAEmM/Ax4CvLEtR_4/s1600-h/IMG_2344.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SgHCUBB65jI/AAAAAAAAEmM/Ax4CvLEtR_4/s400/IMG_2344.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332757082913039922" /></a>I really do need to pack and paint, but I can't wait to get started on Norma's garden!</div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-58973059660371100202009-05-12T06:42:00.000-07:002009-05-12T06:42:00.141-07:00Two little hookers in training...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJAcpLdyII/AAAAAAAAEkE/sgCHOkJgKbk/s1600-h/IMG_2188.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJAcpLdyII/AAAAAAAAEkE/sgCHOkJgKbk/s400/IMG_2188.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328392169967175810" /></a>Makes a Mama proud!Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-21675896087244184892009-05-09T22:05:00.000-07:002009-05-09T22:05:00.692-07:00My secret life with beesIt's 10:00 on Saturday night (the night before Mother's day) and I just finished the gift for my Mother. Unfortunately she has not been to a Saturday meeting since I took this photo in February. </div><div><br /><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJBFmGN3GI/AAAAAAAAEkM/q7HdlB4Gjys/s1600-h/IMG_1383.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJBFmGN3GI/AAAAAAAAEkM/q7HdlB4Gjys/s400/IMG_1383.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328392873514490978" /></a></div><div>So I called to check on her and she is doing fine but has been too busy to come to our meetings. I told her I was interested in buying one of her hooks and she said that I could meet her at the senior citizen center Friday because she has a painting class there. <div><br /></div><div>So I went over to the center to meet her and found her painting a beautiful picture of a little girl. She is very talented. She pulled out a little tin full of the hooks she has been working on recently. She also pulled out little wood vases with wood flowers all that she has hand carved.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJAThlQoeI/AAAAAAAAEj8/3aVCtRenK1w/s1600-h/IMG_2198.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfJAThlQoeI/AAAAAAAAEj8/3aVCtRenK1w/s400/IMG_2198.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328392013309059554" /></a>I asked her how she was able to make all these beautiful things and she very seriously said:</div><div><br /></div><div>"I don't do housework...I dont!" </div><div>I was laughing as she continued... </div><div><br /></div><div>"I go to quilting on Monday, ukulele class on Tuesday, rug hooking on Wednesday, violin class on Thursday, this paining class on Friday and Saturday is the day I wash my hair."</div><div><br /></div><div>Gotta love the priorities of a true artist. </div></div></div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-85312546956703998042009-04-22T10:14:00.000-07:002009-04-24T15:41:16.150-07:00TA- DA!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfI-Kf_j8EI/AAAAAAAAEj0/l8KIjRjbNCU/s1600-h/IMG_2211.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SfI-Kf_j8EI/AAAAAAAAEj0/l8KIjRjbNCU/s400/IMG_2211.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328389659240427586" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">It's done!</span><div><br /></div><div>I un-hooked everything I didn't like and re-hooked it. I think it will look so much better with the leaves outlined. <div><br /></div><div>Now that I almost done I am worried about finishing the edges. When I asked the ladies last Thursday night they said that round rugs are the hardest to finish because you don't want the edges to be wavy. The lady that taught our color class finished her rugs like a binding on a quilt. I could do it that way, but I really want to learn the traditional way 1st. These women are such amazing hookers, I am trying to soak up what I can and learn from their experience before we move away. </div><div><br /></div><div>I am already playing with designs in my head for my next rug. </div><div>Hmm, what to do, what to do?</div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-34627550405916087812009-04-03T20:51:00.000-07:002009-04-06T08:08:00.623-07:00A little break from the bee hive<div>My good friend Stephanie just had a baby and I wanted to make something for her. She (and her husband) are great quilters so I did not want to do a quilt. Honestly since I have started hooking, I have not quilted anything so it was not hard to decide to hook something for her new little girl.</div><div><br /></div><div>I used a fairly simple pattern but then dyed the wool super bright almost crayon like colors. It was really fun to hook something so bright. </div><div><br /></div>I loved the idea I heard from the color class I attended. She said that you should hook a small portion of each part of the rug before you continue to check the colors together. Such a great idea- it's much easier to unhook one line then a whole section!<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SdbbhZxM64I/AAAAAAAAEf8/Q1K8GOVm1jk/s1600-h/IMG_1867.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SdbbhZxM64I/AAAAAAAAEf8/Q1K8GOVm1jk/s400/IMG_1867.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320681376684239746" /></a><br />After I was done hooking it, I blocked it by putting a moist towel over the top of it and ironing it with high steam. I know that color is my weak spot so I was so excited for this class. We discussed color, primary, secondary, aggressive, receding colors. She explained in detail the differences between hue, tint, tone, intensity and chroma and value. We learned about color and how a color wheel works for over an hour. Haley was "board out of her mind" so I drove her home quickly and then ran back to class.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/ScqrqQxmpxI/AAAAAAAAEcU/Y87NExYotNg/s1600-h/colorwheel_browsersafe.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 335px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/ScqrqQxmpxI/AAAAAAAAEcU/Y87NExYotNg/s400/colorwheel_browsersafe.gif" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317251052610168594" /></a><br />The second half of the meeting she taught us how to dye using different techniques. Haley and I drove out to Anaheim to go to the Orange Coast Classics meeting for rug hookers. It was so fun to see all the girls from our chapter out there.<br /><br /><div>Haley and I spend a good deal of time walking around the room looking at other peoples projects and learning new concepts and tricks for rug hooking. Haley fell in love with a bird that a lady was hooking and she used wool roving for the belly of the bird. That's Haley's next project. We even bought a little bag of roving for when she makes it.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sb68_uvOEgI/AAAAAAAAEYc/9uphtkMrYCk/s1600-h/IMG_1512.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sb68_uvOEgI/AAAAAAAAEYc/9uphtkMrYCk/s400/IMG_1512.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313892413407629826" /></a><br /><br />I learned all about prody. It sound really easy and looks cool, but for now I am sticking to traditional hooking.<br /><br />I met Jane Olsen, the author of The Rug Hookers Bible. She is 87 and runs her business with more energy then anyone. She told me that she stays healthy and young because she is a hooker. She said she loves hooking and when you love what you do you don't stop. She also told me that she was one of the original 100 members of Atha, and that she is the only one still alive. So basically she has been hooking longer then anyone alive in the US. I guess you could also say she is the oldest hooker alive.<br /><br />Jane told Haley that she started hooking when she was 10. Haley told Jane that she likes hooking, but can't stand hooking the backgrounds. Jane said that as a child she used to have to hook her Mom's backgrounds for her and that she hated backgrounds then and still does. After hearing Jane say that I noticed that all the patterns she hooks have very little background.<br /><br /></div><div>Haley was taking pictures of everything... including me.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxY6pRZqjI/AAAAAAAAEXU/_FHSi2vYXCY/s1600-h/IMG_1509.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxY6pRZqjI/AAAAAAAAEXU/_FHSi2vYXCY/s400/IMG_1509.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313219424924838450" /></a><br />One of the greatest things about this meeting was the tables of wool for sale. I have struggled with what color to put on the outside ring of my quilt. The girls from my chapter helped me pick out the perfect shade of a gold plaid. One of the ladies measured it against my rug and said that plaid was not enough so she helped me pick out another piece to go with it. She also taught me how to cut the wool into fourths and mark the ring into fourths to make sure the balance of the two colors is equal in the rug. Brilliant.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxfOP6exvI/AAAAAAAAEYM/OEXCOJAbPIA/s1600-h/IMG_1530.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 374px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxfOP6exvI/AAAAAAAAEYM/OEXCOJAbPIA/s400/IMG_1530.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313226358784968434" /></a><br /><br />Several of the women brought their completed projects and they were all displayed for us to enjoy. Everyone voted on their favorite and then they awarded the top 3 rugs.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxZWrr9ylI/AAAAAAAAEYE/RP2uy07Zyrs/s1600-h/IMG_1495.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxZWrr9ylI/AAAAAAAAEYE/RP2uy07Zyrs/s400/IMG_1495.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313219906609465938" /></a>This was Haley's favorite. Ruby has been begging to let her start hooking. I am curious to see if she really enjoys it or if she just wants to do it to go to all the hooking meetings with us. So far she looks to be a good hooker!</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxY50IPKhI/AAAAAAAAEXE/UwHBCCTYMao/s1600-h/IMG_1524.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SbxY50IPKhI/AAAAAAAAEXE/UwHBCCTYMao/s400/IMG_1524.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313219410659322386" /></a>Finally, after 4 hours of hooking this is where I am on my rug. My hand is actually getting sore. I need to find what I am going to hook the outside circle with. The inside blue is so solid that I really want a plaid to hook the outside. I found two beautiful wool sport coats at Goodwill and cut them up. One is a tan herringbone that would look so cool, but I am afraid that it will not be enough. Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-89592402465177271432009-03-05T13:05:00.000-08:002009-03-05T13:05:00.987-08:00Rebecca KnudsenI have purchased 2 books on rug hooking. I have checked out all 5 of the rug hooking books at our library and I have spent hours looking at images of rug patterns and hooked rugs. I love the idea and the look of the hooking but after looking at so many, I realized that most of the patterns follow the same rules. It's hard to explain but the majority of rugs that I have seen look like they were designed by the same 3 artists. Most of the rugs are square or round, but I did see a few rebels that hooked unusual things like a stool or a 3 dimensional pineapple. <br /><br />I can appreciate these rugs in their own way but none of them inspired me like the photos of Rebecca Knudsen's rugs. She is an amazing artist that has posted photos of some of her rugs on her blog. Wow. She has her own wonderful style and I love that her rugs are so personal. She uses symbols, sayings and scriptures to tell the story. I love that the shape of the rug is determined by the image. I love that she hooks text in cursive. I love her rugs! (Although it seems like an insult to refer to them as rugs, they are pieces of fine art). It completely changed the way I thought about hooking. It made it so much more personal and inspired me to find my own style and not follow someone else's pattern. I immediately started sketching and coming up with ideas of what I want to create.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-R1kvbI/AAAAAAAAEOE/ssoj1ZqcupU/s1600-h/angel+001background+gone.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878580494351794" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 210px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-R1kvbI/AAAAAAAAEOE/ssoj1ZqcupU/s400/angel+001background+gone.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZecPbXWobI/AAAAAAAAEOU/i_HquXv2ECo/s1600-h/IMG_3646.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878875109728690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZecPbXWobI/AAAAAAAAEOU/i_HquXv2ECo/s400/IMG_3646.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-ekW8LI/AAAAAAAAEN8/0mr_UQbt00U/s1600-h/flee.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878583911805106" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 284px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-ekW8LI/AAAAAAAAEN8/0mr_UQbt00U/s400/flee.jpg" border="0" /></a>These 3 images below are portraits of her children that she made as gifts for each of her kids. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-RqyVdI/AAAAAAAAEN0/ZqDaLLl9vRg/s1600-h/ben+001.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878580449105362" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 288px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-RqyVdI/AAAAAAAAEN0/ZqDaLLl9vRg/s400/ben+001.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-ISmdBI/AAAAAAAAENs/EVf_GpHu_v8/s1600-h/jacob.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878577931744274" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 396px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-ISmdBI/AAAAAAAAENs/EVf_GpHu_v8/s400/jacob.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-OUPKaI/AAAAAAAAENk/g-EfbxLRtOU/s1600-h/jordan%2B001.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878579549219234" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 288px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZeb-OUPKaI/AAAAAAAAENk/g-EfbxLRtOU/s400/jordan%2B001.jpg" border="0" /></a>look at the details!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZecFb2uEHI/AAAAAAAAEOM/d3UyCgJZ__s/s1600-h/beet+detail.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302878703442595954" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 272px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/SZecFb2uEHI/AAAAAAAAEOM/d3UyCgJZ__s/s400/beet+detail.jpg" border="0" /></a>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-75718501960847431322009-03-04T10:17:00.000-08:002009-03-04T10:24:39.915-08:00Progress report<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sa7GfO8eKXI/AAAAAAAAESs/YvPyCzWJPiw/s1600-h/IMG_1473.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sa7GfO8eKXI/AAAAAAAAESs/YvPyCzWJPiw/s400/IMG_1473.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309399250606369138" /></a>I have been working hard with my new Mcgown hook and it seems to be paying off. I now have all the details in the center circle hooked and just need to hook the background. I say just... but I know it will take forever.<div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sa7GerlZhkI/AAAAAAAAESk/d_HAPyF8pQU/s1600-h/IMG_1476.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YnY5sLCnKEM/Sa7GerlZhkI/AAAAAAAAESk/d_HAPyF8pQU/s400/IMG_1476.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309399241114355266" /></a>I am starting to get worried about the "monks cloth" I purchased at Joanns. They called it Monks cloth, but none of the other hookers have seen anything like it before. They all seem to think it will work fine, but it's starting to get really tight. I will ask Sandy this Thursday if that's just what happens when you are hooking a larger rug.</div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1000553304925482953.post-30715165243841523912009-02-26T22:09:00.000-08:002009-02-26T22:14:56.280-08:00Sandy's houseAll the local hookers meet at Sandy's house every Thursday night. I have not really been able to join them because if Eric gets home before 7 it is his date night with the girls. Last week I got a babysitter so Haley and I could meet with them and it was wonderful. Tonight we went a little late but Haley and I made it to Sandy's house to hook with the ladies. I really feel like I need to pay them for their time. They are so willing to answer all my questions and share their wealth of knowledge and experience with Haley and I. <div><br /></div><div>I have had a hard time deciding the background colors for the rug. Tonight Sandy helped me color plan my beehive rug and I loved her ideas... of course it involves dying more wool so that rocks. I can't wait to get started. </div>Chanel Palmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14738589719900232955noreply@blogger.com0
